Brussels, Belgium – In a landmark move for the advancement of phage technology, three pioneering companies—Proteon Pharmaceuticals, JAFRAL, and PTC Phage Technology Center—have officially established PhageEU ASBL, a non-profit organization headquartered in Brussels. This initiative took place during a period when many other countries, such as the United Kingdom, have undertaken independent initiatives involving policymakers.
A Unified Voice for Phage Technology
PhageEU ASBL is poised to play a pivotal role in representing the interests of the phage community across Europe. With its strategic location in the heart of the European Union, the organization is well-positioned to advocate for the adoption and integration of phage technology. The establishment of PhageEU comes at a critical juncture, as newly elected Members of the European Parliament and a new College of Commissioners prepare to take office. According to the communication from the Secretary-General of PhageEU, this transition represents a singular opportunity for the organization to shape the EU’s political and regulatory framework, thereby maximizing the potential of phages for the benefit of European citizens, patients, and farmers.
