Assistant Professor in Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine
TAILOR Labs at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, is seeking a highly qualified scientific professional for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Molecular Virology and Microbiology. This role is embedded within a GMP-regulated environment and focuses on translational microbiology, infectious disease, and biologic manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on phage production.
The successful candidate will lead GMP phage manufacturing from discovery through release, oversee quality systems and regulatory documentation, and serve as a scientific bridge between laboratory research, clinical teams, regulatory bodies, and industry partners.
Key Responsibilities
GMP Manufacturing & Regulatory Leadership
- Design, implement, audit, and continuously improve a robust GMP manufacturing pipeline
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Review laboratory notebooks, batch records, and manufacturing documentation
- Oversee environmental monitoring programs and quality control testing
- Guide phage manufacturing from discovery, characterization, formulation, to final release
- Coordinate required USP testing through CLIA-certified laboratories
- Build and maintain FDA Master Files for registered phage products
- Support regulatory submissions for new and emerging therapeutic candidates
Laboratory Operations & Clinical Integration
- Oversee daily GMP laboratory operations
- Mentor scientific staff, trainees, and junior researchers
- Ensure high-quality experimental design, execution, and documentation
- Act as a technical advisor to clinical, pharmacy, and regulatory teams
- Contribute to the design and execution of clinical trials and compassionate use cases
- Manage isolate and sample handling, documentation, and reporting for GMP-compliant trials
Collaboration, Grants & Industry Engagement
- Build partnerships with academic institutions, biotech companies, and industry collaborators
- Develop sponsored research agreements and manufacturing collaborations
- Prepare cost estimates, service quotes, and at-cost service models
- Work with administrative and legal teams on research, manufacturing, and compassionate-use agreements
- Contribute to multi-investigator grant proposals supporting Baylor’s phage technology and translational research programs
Qualifications Required
- PhD in a basic science discipline or a closely related field
- At least five (5) years of relevant experience in microbiology, virology, biologic manufacturing, or regulatory development
- Demonstrated expertise in GMP environments, biologics manufacturing, and translational research
