The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is inviting applications for the position of Junior Specialist or Assistant Specialist in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine. This exciting opportunity allows researchers to contribute to cutting-edge malaria genomics and infectious disease research while working in the renowned Greenhouse Laboratory at the EPPIcenter.

Researchers with experience in molecular biology, next-generation sequencing (NGS), genomics, and bioinformatics will find this role an excellent opportunity to build a career in translational infectious disease research.

The Greenhouse Laboratory focuses on understanding malaria through molecular epidemiology and immunology. The team’s research supports malaria control programs worldwide by generating genomic data to study:

  • Drug resistance
  • Diagnostic resistance
  • Malaria transmission
  • Naturally acquired immunity
  • Genomic surveillance

The laboratory collaborates globally and applies advanced molecular techniques to improve infectious disease control strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of laboratory and research activities including:

  • DNA and RNA extraction
  • PCR, multiplex PCR and qPCR
  • Whole genome and targeted amplicon sequencing
  • High-throughput serological assays
  • Phage-immunoprecipitation sequencing
  • Malaria parasite culture
  • Bioinformatics and statistical analysis
  • Scientific literature review
  • Laboratory troubleshooting
  • Data visualization and reporting
  • Manuscript preparation
  • Grant support
  • SOP development
  • Laboratory training and mentorship

The position also includes maintaining laboratory databases, sample biobanks, and collaborating with international research partners.

Qualifications & Skills Required

Junior Specialist

Applicants should possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology or related field
  • Laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques
  • Experience with PCR and Next Generation Sequencing
  • Knowledge of scientific literature analysis
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Experience with Python or R for laboratory data analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Assistant Specialist

Applicants should additionally have:

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology or related discipline
  • Minimum three years of relevant research experience
  • Experience in NGS library preparation
  • Laboratory information management systems
  • Scientific publication experience
  • Ideal candidates may also have experience with:
  • RNA sequencing
  • Gene expression profiling
  • Bacteriophage culture
  • Protein purification
  • Luminex assays
  • DNA quality control instruments
  • R programming
