Life Scientist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital – Full-Time Research Opportunity
The Royal Melbourne Hospital is hiring a Life Scientist to support advanced research on human immunity to respiratory viruses, including influenza and other viral infections.
This position is based at the world-renowned The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity and offers the opportunity to contribute to improving vaccine effectiveness and understanding immune responses to infection.
The role is part of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, a globally important centre that monitors influenza viruses circulating worldwide. Together with partner centres in Atlanta, Beijing, London, and Tokyo, the team plays a critical role in global influenza surveillance and vaccine development.
Key Responsibilities
- Processing research study samples including PBMC isolation Performing serological assays such as:
- Hemagglutination inhibition assays, Microneutralization assays, ELISA
- Virus propagation and cell culture
- Next-generation sequencing using Oxford Nanopore
- Reverse genetics and site-directed mutagenesis
- Recombinant protein and monoclonal antibody expression
- Flow cytometry and immune cell analysis
- Single-cell gene expression studies
- Data analysis using Excel, GraphPad Prism, and RStudio
- Maintaining accurate laboratory records and databases
Qualifications & Skills Required
- Applicants should have: Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Science or equivalent , Major in Immunology or related field
- At least 5 years of relevant laboratory experience
- Experience with influenza or respiratory viruses preferred
- Strong experience in: Cell culture, Virus isolation, Plaque assays and TCID50, qRT-PCR, Cloning and transfection, Protein expression, Flow cytometry, PBMC handling, Biosafety procedures
- Experience with research data analysis
