Opportunity as Associate Professor in Microbiology
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alabama is recruiting an Associate or Full Professor in Microbiology as part of a strategic faculty expansion in microbial sciences. The position is expected to begin in August 2026, and the University seeks an established scientist capable of leading an independent, externally funded research program.
About the Role
The selected candidate will:
- Lead innovative research focused on microorganisms across diverse microbiology disciplines.
- Advance research areas such as host–pathogen biology, microbial ecology, microbiomes, bacteriophage science, or synthetic biology.
- Secure and sustain competitive external research funding.
- Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers.
- Collaborate across interdisciplinary research institutes and faculty teams.
- Teach undergraduate microbiology or biology courses and graduate-level specialty courses.
Qualifications & Skills Required
- PhD or equivalent degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience in a tenure-track or tenured academic role (or equivalent research leadership position).
- Strong publication record aligned with career stage.
- Demonstrated success obtaining external research funding.
- Evidence of excellence in university teaching and student mentorship.
- Established national or international scientific reputation preferred.
