PhD Positions in Hadal Biogeochemistry & Microbial Ecology – Denmark (2026)
The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is inviting applications for five fully funded PhD positions at the Danish Center for Hadal Research (HADAL), Department of Biology. These positions focus on deep-sea biogeochemistry and microbial ecology, exploring life and elemental cycling in the deepest parts of the global ocean.
The HADAL Center is to: Microbial life in extreme deep-sea environments, biogeochemical cycling of elements, climate-relevant processes, and sustainability. The PhD is funded by: Danish National Research Foundation and Independent Research Fund Denmark.
PhD Project Opportunities
PhD A – Dark Carbon Fixation in the Deep Ocean
This project investigates how dark carbon fixation supports life at extreme ocean depths. It involves isotope incubation techniques (¹³C, ¹⁴C), NanoSIMS, MAR-FISH, and genomic analyses to identify key microbial players and processes.
PhD B – Plastic Pollution in Hadal Trenches
Focus on the distribution and characteristics of micro- and nano-plastics in deep-sea sediments using advanced imaging and spectroscopic methods such as micro-Raman and OPTIR.
PhD C – Viral Ecology in Deep-Sea Microbial Systems
Explore the role of viruses and bacteriophages in microbial ecosystem functioning, including:
- Viral metagenomics and transcriptomics
- Auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs)
- Virus–host interactions
PhD D – Effects of Hydrostatic Pressure on Microbial Function
Study how increasing pressure impacts microbial physiology and cellular processes using high-pressure incubation and advanced microscopy techniques such as BONCAT.
PhD E – Microbial Membrane Lipids & Carbon Cycling
Investigate microbial lipid biomarkers as indicators of carbon degradation in deep-sea sediments under varying environmental conditions.
Research Environment
The selected candidates must participate in international deep-sea expeditions (several weeks at sea) and work within a multidisciplinary and international research team. They will have access to the most advanced research tools in: Genomics & bioinformatics, Microscopy & imaging and environmental chemistry.
Qualifications Required
- Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, biogeochemistry, environmental science, or a related field
- Be willing to participate in extended ocean research voyages
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted in English and include:
- Motivation letter (max. 2 pages)
- Detailed CV
- Academic transcripts (Bachelor’s & Master’s)
- Contact details of at least two referees
Note: All documents should be uploaded in PDF format.
