PhD in Microbiology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU)
The Papenfort Laboratory at Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (Germany) is inviting applications for PhD student positions in Microbiology. The lab focuses on understanding gene regulation in microbial pathogens, with particular emphasis on post-transcriptional control mechanisms and their role in quorum sensing, virulence, biofilm formation, and host interactions.
These fully funded PhD positions offer an outstanding opportunity to work in a highly collaborative, international research environment while addressing fundamental questions in bacterial pathogenesis and infection biology. The Papenfort Lab studies how bacteria regulate gene expression after transcription and how these regulatory networks shape complex microbial behaviours. By uncovering these molecular mechanisms, the lab aims to contribute to the development of novel strategies to treat and prevent microbial infections.
Available PhD Research Projects
A) Microbiota–Pathogen Interactions
This project investigates how bacteria within the human gut microbiome interact and how pathogenic species disrupt these interactions. Key research themes include:
- Interactions between microbial commensals and pathogens
- Quorum sensing and interspecies communication
- Biofilm formation and virulence regulation
- Model pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae
B) Phage–Host Interactions
This project focuses on understanding the dynamics of phage infection in Vibrio cholerae. The research aims to uncover:
- Mechanisms of phage infection and host takeover
- Bacterial anti-phage defence systems
- Single-cell level infection dynamics
- Phage–host interactions during human infection
Required Qualifications
- A Master’s degree (MSc) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, or a related discipline
- Previous experience in microbiology or molecular biology (preferred)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international research team
- Strong motivation for scientific research, creativity, and self-initiative
Application Procedure
Applications must be submitted in English and should include:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Publication list (if applicable)
- A letter summarising research interests, experience, and career goals
- Names and contact details (email/phone) of at least two references
- Submit via email to: kai.papenfort@uni-jena.de
