Washington University in St. Louis is inviting applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join an innovative research program investigating picobirnaviruses (PBVs), a group of viruses now proposed to represent the third known group of RNA bacteriophages. This project offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in phage biology, microbiome research, and host-virus interactions.

This position focuses on studying Picobirnaviruses (PBVs)—small double-stranded RNA viruses that have historically been classified as eukaryotic viruses. Recent research suggests that PBVs may instead represent an entirely new class of RNA bacteriophages, opening exciting new avenues in microbiome and phage research.

The successful candidate will investigate:

  • Host-phage interactions in vitro and in vivo
  • PBV biology and bacterial host specificity
  • Microbiome dynamics
  • Gnotobiotic mouse models
  • Impact of RNA phages on human health

This multidisciplinary project combines experimental microbiology, virology, genomics, and computational biology.

Key Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will:

  • Design and conduct independent research experiments
  • Perform next-generation sequencing (NGS) analyses
  • Apply bioinformatics approaches to study viral genomes
  • Conduct bacteriological and virological experiments
  • Assist in grant preparation and scientific reporting
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research outcomes at scientific meetings
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and comply with research ethics and good laboratory practices

Qualifications & Skills Required

Applicants should possess:

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree
  • Strong interest in bacteriophage or microbiome research
  • Experience in molecular biology or microbiology
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills
