Research Associate in Bacteriophage Endolysins at University of Leicester
The University of Leicester is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate in Microbiology to join its Department of Microbiology and Infection.
The successful candidate will investigate bacteriophage-encoded endolysins, with a particular focus on endolysins found in Staphylococcus phages that encode two distinct endolysins.
The project will explore the structural and functional relationships between these enzymes, contributing to a deeper understanding of bacteriophage biology and the development of novel antimicrobial approaches.
Key Responsibilities
The Research Associate will:
- Design and conduct molecular, microbiological and biochemical experiments.
- Investigate bacteriophage-encoded endolysins and their biological functions.
- Perform recombinant protein expression and purification.
- Conduct molecular cloning and enzyme characterisation.
- Study bacterial systems, including Staphylococcus species where relevant.
- Analyse, interpret and communicate experimental data.
- Contribute to research publications and conference presentations.
- Develop research collaborations within the University and with external partners.
- Work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary research team.
- Support the mentoring and development of students and junior researchers.
- Contribute to an inclusive, collaborative and impactful research environment.
Qualifications & Skills Required
Applicants should hold a PhD in microbiology or a closely related discipline, or possess equivalent research experience with substantial expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Microbiology
- Molecular microbiology
- Biochemistry
- Recombinant protein expression
- Protein purification
- Molecular cloning
- Enzyme characterisation
- Bacterial systems
Experience with Staphylococcus aureus, bacteriophages or antimicrobial proteins would be particularly advantageous.
The University is also looking for candidates with strong:
- Experimental design and problem-solving skills
- Data analysis and interpretation abilities
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Collaboration and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently
- Mentoring and research-support skills
This position provides an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research into bacteriophage biology and phage-derived antimicrobial proteins.
The research has potential relevance to the development of novel antimicrobial strategies, making it particularly interesting for researchers working in microbiology, phage biology, antimicrobial research, and protein biochemistry.
The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to publications, scientific conferences and collaborative research activities.
