Research Technician (Phage Research) at the University of Manchester
The University of Manchester is inviting applications for a Research Technician to join the Federici Laboratory within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. This exciting opportunity offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge research exploring bacteriophage–bacteria interactions at mucosal surfaces and their role in infection, inflammation, and antimicrobial resistance.
The successful candidate will become part of the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation, a multidisciplinary research environment equipped with world-class facilities for genomics, bioimaging, flow cytometry, and animal research.
Key Responsibilities
As a Research Technician, you will:
- Support laboratory research projects by planning, organizing, and performing experiments.
- Troubleshoot experimental procedures and optimize laboratory protocols.
- Analyze and present research data for publications and scientific presentations.
- Train and supervise students and laboratory staff in experimental techniques and safe laboratory practices.
- Manage laboratory inventories, stock control, and procurement of research consumables.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, risk assessments, and data protection requirements.
Qualifications & Skills Required
Applicants should have:
- A QCF Level 6 qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant biological science discipline, or comparable laboratory experience.
- Extensive laboratory experience in microbiology and/or immunology.
- Experience working with mouse models and a Home Office Licence (or eligibility to obtain one).
- Practical experience with:
- Flow cytometry
- qPCR
- Cell culture
- Western blotting
- ELISA
- Excellent organizational, communication, and independent working skills.
- Knowledge of gut or lung infection biology. Experience in bacteriophage research. Familiarity with:
- RStudio
- GraphPad Prism
- Microsoft Office applications
