Sessional Lecturer in Microbiology at the University of Toronto
The Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto is seeking a Sessional Lecturer to teach MGY377H1: Microbiology I: Bacteria during the Fall 2026 semester.
This undergraduate course provides an in-depth introduction to bacteria, covering bacterial structure, biology, adaptation and their effects on human health. It provides a foundation for advanced study in areas including bacterial physiology, bacterial genetics, molecular pathogenesis, immunology and environmental microbiology.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
- Deliver approximately half of the lectures during the Fall semester.
- Teach lectures every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:00–3:00 p.m.
- Help prepare and deliver the midterm and final examinations.
- Work with Teaching Assistants as required.
- Provide weekly office hours for student support.
- Respond to student questions and provide academic guidance.
- Update existing course materials where necessary.
- Participate in some online student interactions.
Qualifications Required
Applicants should have knowledge and experience in foundational microbiology, including:
- Bacterial cell structure
- Bacterial biology and physiology
- Bacteriophage biology
- Bacterial pathogenesis
- Antimicrobial resistance
Previous teaching experience is desirable but not required. The application should also include evidence of expertise in genome sequencing, genome analysis and yeast biology, together with the names of one or more qualified referees.
