The UNSW Sydney is hiring a Technical Officer for its Recombinant Products Facility (RPF), offering an exciting opportunity for scientists interested in biologics production, bacteriophage research, protein purification, and biotechnology infrastructure support.

Located in Sydney, NSW, this full-time fixed-term role runs until May 2027 and provides hands-on exposure to advanced research infrastructure, including microbial fermentation systems, chromatography platforms, HPLC, and biologics characterization technologies.

About the Recombinant Products Facility (RPF)

The Recombinant Products Facility supports researchers and industry partners through the production and purification of biologics, including Proteins, Nucleic acids and bacteriophages

The facility operates under an ISO9001-accredited Quality Management System (QMS) and manages advanced biotechnology infrastructure such as:

  • Microbial fermentation systems
  • Cell culture platforms
  • Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF)
  • Process chromatography systems
  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Analytical characterization equipment

This position is ideal for candidates looking to strengthen their expertise in biologics manufacturing workflows and translational biotechnology research.

Key Responsibilities

The Technical Officer will support the day-to-day operations of the facility by:

  • Running small-scale protein expression systems
  • Supporting bioreactor operations
  • Preparing media, buffers, and stock solutions
  • Performing chromatography and purification workflows
  • Conducting assays for biologics characterization
  • Supporting equipment maintenance and laboratory operations
  • Assisting with inductions and laboratory housekeeping
  • Maintaining accurate experimental documentation under ISO9001 standards

Qualifications & Skills Required

  • Applicants should possess: A relevant qualification in microbiology, biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related scientific disciplines
  • Experience or familiarity with: Fermentation, Cell culture, Molecular biology techniques, Protein purification,Protein chromatography, Analytical assays
  • Strong laboratory calculation skills for preparing media, buffers, and sample dilutions
  • Excellent documentation and organizational abilities
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience working in regulated environments or under a documented Quality Management System (QMS) will be highly regarded.
