This role focuses on developing innovative biosensing technologies to detect PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly known as \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d in water samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PFAS are persistent environmental pollutants associated with serious health and ecological risks. Traditional detection methods such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) are highly sensitive but expensive and not suitable for rapid field use. This project aims to overcome these challenges by creating a low-cost, portable biosensor for real-time environmental monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Designing and characterizing PFOA-binding peptides<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing aptamer-triggered rolling circle amplification (RCA) systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Translating lab-based sensing chemistry into a paper-based, field-ready biosensor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support development of biosensors for PFAS detection <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform molecular biology experiments including PCR, cloning, and nucleic acid handling <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture and maintain bacterial systems <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assist in peptide design and characterization <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute to development of portable sensing platforms <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain accurate experimental records and documentation <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaborate within an interdisciplinary research team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Qualifications &amp; Skills Required<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Master\u2019s degree in: Engineering Biology, Synthetic Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hands-on experience in: Bacterial culturing, PCR and cloning, Nucleic acid techniques.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong organizational and laboratory skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience with bacteriophages, knowledge of bioinformatics and an interest in interdisciplinary research <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Familiarity with biosensing or environmental monitoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For more phage-related research opportunities, check <a href=\"https:\/\/thephage.xyz\/jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"here\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This job post was originally curated by <a href=\"https:\/\/thephage.xyz\/jobs\">www.thephage.xyz\/jobs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Assistant in Engineering Biology at Cranfield University.
