{"id":9382,"date":"2026-08-18T06:00:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T06:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thephage.xyz\/jobs\/?post_type=job&#038;p=9382"},"modified":"2026-08-18T06:00:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T06:00:36","slug":"professor-in-bacteriophage-biology-evolution","status":"publish","type":"job","link":"https:\/\/thephage.xyz\/jobs\/jobs\/professor-in-bacteriophage-biology-evolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor in Bacteriophage Biology &amp; Evolution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Microbiology &amp; Immunology and the Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia (UBC) are inviting applications for a faculty position at the rank of Professor in Bacteriophage Biology &amp; Evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This recruitment represents a strategic expansion of UBC&#8217;s research excellence in microbiology, genomics, infectious disease and microbial evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university is seeking an outstanding researcher with an established and internationally recognized research program focused on areas including: Bacteria-phage interactions, Anti-phage defence, Bacterial immunity, Microbial evolution, Antimicrobial resistance, Bacterial diseases and epidemiology, Infectious disease emergence and pandemics<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research programs with an emphasis on the epidemiology of bacterial diseases in humans and pandemics are particularly encouraged. The successful candidate will become a core member of UBC&#8217;s interdisciplinary Prepare for Pandemics through Advanced Research in Evolution (PrePARE) research cluster, which focuses on understanding the emergence and evolution of infectious diseases and disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Michael Smith Laboratories and the Department of Microbiology &amp; Immunology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful candidate will be expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop an innovative, externally funded and internationally competitive research program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establish collaborations across UBC and beyond<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in microbiology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop research programs addressing fundamental and current microbiological questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute to scientific publications and research leadership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in departmental, university and academic community service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive academic environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility and Qualifications Required<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants should have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A PhD in a relevant discipline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Postdoctoral research experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A strong record of research achievement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A substantial publication record in bacteriophage biology, microbial evolution, microbiology or a closely related field<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrated research excellence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to develop an externally funded research program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience or potential for graduate and postdoctoral supervision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A strong commitment to teaching and academic service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The position is particularly suited to established researchers with an internationally competitive research program in bacteriophage biology, bacteria-phage interactions, bacterial immunity, evolution, antimicrobial resistance or related areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants must submit their applications through Academic Jobs Online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The application must include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cover letter \u2013 Maximum 2 pages, describing research vision and accomplishments, teaching philosophy and experience, and leadership\/service activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curriculum vitae \u2013 Including a complete publication list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research statement \u2013 Maximum 4 pages, describing two potentially fundable research projects and explaining how the proposed research fits within the PrePARE research cluster.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching statement \u2013 Maximum 2 pages, describing teaching philosophy and accomplishments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diversity statement \u2013 Maximum 1 page, addressing relevant experiences and future plans for contributing to equity, diversity and inclusion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four reference letters \u2013 References must upload letters on institutional letterhead.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For more phage-related teaching opportunities, check <a href=\"https:\/\/thephage.xyz\/jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"here\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Microbiology &amp; Immunology and the Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia (UBC) are inviting applications for a faculty position at the rank of Professor in Bacteriophage Biology &amp; Evolution.
