The project will investigate a fundamental question in phage biology: why does the physiological state of a bacterial cell influence the outcome of phage infection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research team will investigate how different physiological states, including dormancy, nutrient limitation, growth transitions, and cellular stress, can create temporary phage resistance or tolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project aims to understand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why some bacterial cells prevent productive phage infection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why other cells become infected but survive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How bacterial physiological state influences phage killing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The molecular mechanisms responsible for transient phage resistance and tolerance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How pre-infection cellular state can predict infection outcomes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding these mechanisms could provide new insights into bacterial-phage interactions and the factors that determine the success or failure of phage infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Constructing bacterial strains and genetic reporters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishing bacterial-phage experimental systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using bacterial genetics and genetic engineering to manipulate host physiology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Performing quantitative phage infection assays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing bacterial responses under defined physiological conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using fluorescence and time-lapse microscopy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Linking bacterial physiological state before infection with infection outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analysing quantitative experimental data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researcher will also work with the Bakshi Lab&#8217;s single-cell phage infection platform and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team working across microbiology, engineering and quantitative modelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Qualifications &amp; Skills Required<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The position is suitable for researchers with a background in microbiology, molecular biology, phage biology or related fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applicants should have obtained, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in an appropriate discipline such as:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, Phage Biology, Synthetic Biology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research Associate:<\/strong> Applicants who already hold a PhD may be appointed at Research Associate level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research Assistant:<\/strong> Applicants who have submitted their PhD but have not yet received the degree will initially be appointed at Research Assistant level.
