The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is inviting applications for a Researcher III position in the Department of Microbiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful candidate will join the Dokland Laboratory and contribute to research projects spanning bacteriophage biology, bacterial genetics, structural biology and biochemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Researcher III will contribute to two major research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Structural Biology of Staphylococcal Bacteriophages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One project focuses on understanding the structural biology of bacteriophages that infect staphylococci. The research will also investigate the mobilisation of Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> pathogenicity islands. This work combines microbiology with structural and molecular approaches to better understand bacteriophage biology and bacterial genetic elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ribosome Biology in Streptococcus pneumoniae<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The second project focuses on the assembly, processing and activation of ribosomes in Streptococcus pneumoniae<\/em>, commonly known as pneumococcus. The researcher may also have opportunities to contribute to additional projects, including research related to capsid assembly in HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The successful candidate will independently perform experiments in support of the laboratory’s research goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Conducting research using bacterial genetics, biochemistry and structural biology approaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Setting up and performing laboratory experiments<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Collecting, recording and analysing research data<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Monitoring experimental outcomes and identifying unusual results<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Suggesting improvements or modifications to experimental procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Developing and improving laboratory techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Assisting other researchers with experiments<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Preparing media and supporting bacterial growth experiments<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Performing gel electrophoresis<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Supporting electron microscopy work<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Presenting research findings<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Participating in laboratory meetings<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Providing general laboratory support when required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Qualifications & Skills Required<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    • Candidates with a Master’s degree in one of the following areas may be particularly well suited: Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biological Sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Other related life science disciplines<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • At least one year of research laboratory experience is preferred.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
