Phage Therapy Scientist Opportunity at UKHSA
The UK Health Security Agency is inviting applications for a scientist position within its Antimicrobial Development, Discovery and Diagnostics (AD3) team based at Porton Down, United Kingdom.
This exciting opportunity focuses on bacteriophage therapy development, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research, and diagnostic innovation aimed at supporting future clinical use of phage therapy in the UK.
The role is part of the Countermeasures Development, Evaluation, and Preparedness Division, which conducts high-impact research on vaccines, therapeutics, and emerging infectious diseases.
About the Phage Programme
The successful candidate will contribute to the UKHSA bacteriophage “integrated pathway” programme, which is building a national phage service and in-house bacteriophage collection to support clinical applications of phage therapy.
The programme also focuses on developing novel phage susceptibility testing methods and supporting UK-based phage manufacturing initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluating clinical bacterial isolates against therapeutic bacteriophages
- Developing and validating novel phage susceptibility assays
- Managing and expanding the bacteriophage collection
- Supporting antimicrobial therapy evaluation projects
- Supervising and mentoring junior laboratory staff
- Analysing scientific data and preparing reports and publications
- Collaborating with clinicians, academic institutions, and industry partners
- Maintaining compliance with laboratory quality and safety standards
Qualifications and Skills Required
- A degree in Biomedical Science, Microbiology, Biology, or related discipline
- A relevant PhD or equivalent microbiological research experience
- Practical experience in antimicrobial susceptibility testing
- Experience evaluating antimicrobial therapies, including bacteriophages
- Experience working in ACDP2 containment laboratories
- Strong communication and scientific writing skills
- Experience supervising junior researchers or technical staff
