Ellison Institute of Technology Building

About the Research Group

The Zürcher Group, based within the Generative Biology Institute (GBI) at the Ellison Institute of Technology, is developing next-generation methods to rapidly and scalably write entire microbial and bacteriophage genomes. The group’s research aims to:

  • Enable precise genetic isolation of organisms
  • Dissect host–pathogen interactions at the genome scale
  • Build platforms for large-vector assembly toward gigabase-scale genome synthesis

This work sits at the forefront of synthetic genomics, engineering biology, and host–microbe interactions, with strong potential for both fundamental discovery and translational impact.

Position Summary

The Generative Biology Institute is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Zürcher Group. This position is ideal for researchers aiming to develop independent research directions while contributing to ambitious, large-scale genome engineering efforts.

The postdoc will take a leading role in experimental design and execution, data analysis, and method development, while collaborating closely with researchers across GBI. The role offers access to exceptional infrastructure, interdisciplinary expertise, and a collaborative environment dedicated to advancing engineering biology at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and optimise experimental workflows in synthetic and microbial genomics
  • Lead or co-lead research projects aligned with group objectives
  • Analyse and interpret complex biological datasets
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation, grant writing, and scientific presentations
  • Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the broader research culture at GBI
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams within the institute

Applying to Research Groups

This Postdoctoral position is advertised alongside similar roles across multiple GBI research groups, each with distinct research themes.

Applicants must apply to specific research groups as part of their application.

  • You may select up to three (3) research groups on the application form
  • In your cover letter, clearly indicate:
    • The group(s) you are applying to
    • Your scientific interests and proposed contributions
    • Relevant expertise and experience for each selected group

⚠️ Applications that do not specify research group preferences, or that select more than three groups, will not be considered.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted exclusively via the Ellison Institute of Technology job portal
  • Applicants are strongly advised not to contact Principal Investigators directly, as unsolicited outreach will not be considered
  • Due to application volume, the review and decision process may take 3–6 months
